In 2013, Krungsri reached another key milestone in its history when it became a subsidiary of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. (BTMU), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Japan’s largest banking group and one of the world’s largest and most diversified financial groups. BTMU’s investment resulted in credit ratings upgraded for Krungsri from key credit rating agencies, Fitch Ratings upgraded Krungsri’s rating from BBB to A-, which is at the country ceiling level for Thailand. while Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s also upgraded Krungsri’s ratings from Baa2 to Baa1 and from BBB- to BBB+, respectively. Locally, Fitch Ratings (Thailand) and TRIS Ratings also upgraded the Bank’s rating from AA-(tha) to AAA(tha) and from AA- to AAA, respectively.
This strategic partnership leverages both Krungsri and BTMU’s complementary strengths thus establishing a unique position for Krungsri in the Thai banking industry. BTMU is a world-class financial institution with a business network covering in nearly 50 countries worldwide. The partnership strengthens Krungsri’s leading position in the retail banking business in Thailand and across the region by providing access to a larger customer base. It also significantly enhances the scale and diversity of Krungsri’s corporate and SME banking businesses, particularly with Japanese enterprises and other MNCs in Thailand and across ASEAN.
Today, Krungsri is the fifth largest bank in Thailand with 1,302.2 billion baht in loans, 1,032.5 billion baht in deposits and 1,753.9 billion baht in total assets (as of March 2016). Krungsri Group serves over 8 million retail and commercial customers through 675 domestic (of which 638 are banking branches and 37 are auto business branches) and 3 overseas branches plus over 27,000 touch points nationwide.
